Marquam Project System Upgrade

Learn how we’re strengthening the energy grid and improving service for you

As we work toward Oregon’s clean energy future, we’re strengthening the energy grid to make it smarter, more efficient and more reliable for you. Among our many projects, in 2019 we completed our large, multiyear Marquam Project, one of the biggest grid upgrade projects completed on the West Coast.

Planning for the Marquam Project began in 2002, and took 17 years from planning to completion. As part of the project, PGE installed 57,000 feet of distribution lines and 23,000 feet of transmission lines in the Marquam area of downtown Portland, and built a new, more advanced substation to serve the new lines.

These upgrades help keep pace with growth in our region and improve overall system operations for all customers.

Building a brighter future for you

This is just one of many projects we’re working on to enhance and modernize the energy grid, making it smarter and more resilient, and creating a platform for a clean energy future.

Thank you for your patience as we strengthen the energy grid.
